2024 YOUTH TOUR TRIP

June 15- 21, 2024

The Ohio’s Electric Cooperatives Youth Tour is an annual leadership program sponsored by URE. It’s a weeklong, all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., that gives exceptional high school students the opportunity to meet with their congressional leaders at the U.S. Capitol, make new friends from across the state and country, and see many of the famous Washington, D.C., sights.

High School Seniors from URE member households that receive ELECTRIC service are eligible to compete in this one-time scholarship contest.

URE 2 Year Path – Career Technical/Community College Scholarship Competition

Focuses on personal essay/career plans but also considers contributions made to community and school activities.

As area schools have increased programming and curriculum focused on career readiness and high-demand employment fields, URE is committed to keeping pace with the pathways today’s students are exploring.

URE will award 3 scholarships ($1,500, $1,000 and $500) based on a personal essay/career plans, contributions made to the community, and school and leadership activities.

URE 4 Year Path – College Scholarship Competition

Focuses on academic achievement but also considers contributions made to community and school activities.

URE will award 3 scholarships ($2,500, $1,500 and $1,000) based on academic achievement, contributions made to the community, and school and leadership activities.

How to Apply

2 Year Path Scholarship Rules
  1. Applicants must be a son, daughter, or legal ward of a URE residential member living on the lines and receiving service at the time of competition.
  2. Applicants must be graduating seniors who have all basic credits for community college or technical school entrance.
  3. Applicants must have a grade point average of 2.5 or above on a 4.0 scale, or equivalent standing on a nontraditional scale.
  4. Applicants may not be immediate family members of or reside with, people who are employed by any electric cooperative in Ohio (employees, trustees, managers, OEC, or affiliated organizations such as Buckeye Power Inc., RESCO, Cardinal Operating Company, etc.).
  5. Applications for the URE competition must be submitted (typed to be accepted) on the forms provided by URE or downloaded from this page. Application forms must be returned to the co-op office by Monday, February 12, 2024. Application information must be confined to the official nomination form. The only attachments permitted are transcripts, student essay, teacher recommendations, and one photo of the applicant. (Student essay and teacher recommendations must be no more than 500 words.)
  6. Applicants who have received "full-ride" scholarships (tuition, room, board, and books) to the schools of their choice are not eligible for scholarships from URE.
  7. Personal interviews will be conducted with selected applicants. The applicants will be judged for scholastic record, personal achievement, school and community activities, poise, personality, and appearance in the interview. Finalists are not permitted to bring any outside materials to their interviews (electronic presentations, props, handouts, etc.).
  8. Winners will be notified as soon as possible after judging.

4 Year Path Scholarship Rules
  1. Applicants must be a son, daughter, or legal ward of a URE residential member living on the lines and receiving service at the time of competition.
  2. Applicants must be graduating seniors who have all basic credits for college, or proper vocational, or technical school entrance. (A "proper vocational or technical school" is defined as a post-secondary institution where credits can be transferred to a state-accredited four-year college.)
  3. Applicants must have a current career average of 3.5 or above on a 4.0 scale, or equivalent standing on a nontraditional scale. Winners must provide proof of enrollment in an accredited college in order to claim their scholarship. Applicants, who are accepted and then enrolled in an accredited school of nursing, working toward a degree, are also eligible.
  4. Applicants may not be immediate family members of, or reside with, people who are employed by any electric cooperative in Ohio (employees, trustees, managers, OEC, or affiliated organizations such as Buckeye Power, Inc., RESCO, Cardinal Operating Company, etc.).
  5. Applications for the URE competition must be submitted (typed to be accepted) on the forms provided by URE or downloaded from this page.   7. All scholarships must be accepted in the first academic year after proof of enrollment is received. However, an extension of one year may be granted for just cause in the judgment of the president of OEC. In the event a student is unable to fulfill his enrollment obligation under this program, the award is forfeited.
  8. Personal interviews will be conducted with selected applicants. The applicants will receive points for scholastic record, personal achievement, school, and community activities. Points will also be awarded for poise, personality, and appearance in the interview. Finalists are not permitted to bring any outside materials to their interviews (electronic presentations, props, handouts, etc.).
  9. Winners will be notified as soon as possible after judging. One winner will be chosen to represent URE in the statewide scholarship competition where he or she will compete for additional scholarships. Eligibility requirements apply. Contact the cooperative for details.

Statewide Scholarship Competition

The 4-year path first place student will be URE’s representative to the OEC (Ohio’s Electric Cooperatives) statewide scholarship competition.

This competition recognizes students for their classroom achievements along with their contributions to the community and their ability to speak in front of a panel of judges.
